Why do I have to study Sociology?

GCSE Sociology (AQA) helps students develop a deeper understanding of society, human behaviour, and key social structures such as family, education, crime, and inequality. It encourages critical thinking, analytical skills, and the ability to evaluate different perspectives

 

How will I be examined?

At the end of Year 11, students will sit two exam papers for GCSE Sociology. Each paper accounts for 50% of the final grade and lasts for 1 hour and 45 minutes. Upon successful completion of the course, students will receive a single GCSE qualification in Sociology.

 

What will I study?

Paper 1: The sociology of families and education

 

What's assessed?

  • The sociology of families

  • The sociology of education

  • Relevant areas of social theory and methodology

 

Students will be expected to draw on knowledge and understanding of the entire course of study to show a deeper understanding of these topics.

 

Paper 2: The sociology of crime and deviance and social stratification

 

What's assessed?

  • The sociology of crime and deviance

  • The sociology of social stratification

  • Relevant areas of social theory and methodology
